Advanced Poetry Workshop

In a community atmosphere, our poetry, along with our sense of self, can reach new heights. Our voice sharpens and clarifies by talking about and celebrating the writing of others, and this, in turn, deepens the writing voice in our own poetry. Perhaps, though, one of the least discussed, though arguably most important parts of the workshop that we will focus on is listening. In this advanced poetry workshop, participants should come with one to two poems ready to discuss. We will spend the bulk of class workshopping so that by the end of the six class sessions, if a writer so desires, the poetry can be ready to submit for publication. And the writer, as suggested by Felicia Rose Chavez in The Anti-Racist Workshop: How to Decolonize the Creative Classroom, can be ready to "Engage in a supportive arts community."

Instructor: Meg Thompson is a writer and recovering academic living in Northeast Ohio. Her work has appeared in Best of the Net, McSweeney's Online Tendency, The Sun, and many other now-defunct magazines. She has worked as an English lecturer at the random universities that dot the Midwest, and, more successfully, as a dishwasher. She was a parent-fellow at Martha Vineyard’s Institute of Creative Writing and a finalist for the Key West Literary Seminar Emerging Writing Awards. If you're still on the fence, chew on this: she was voted Most Funny in her sorority. (Two years in a row. Stop asking about it.) And when it comes to prestigious literary prizes, she has applied to them. Find her on Instagram @benignheartmommer.
