Now that you're writing, do aspects of writing challenge you? Could you do with a painless review of grammar, mechanics, and writing conventions focused on your own works in progress? Topics for this craft talk may include the following: Formatting manuscripts, grammar and punctuation rules that matter, summarizing source materials (for nonfiction writers) avoiding plagiarism (for nonfiction writers), citing sources (for nonfiction writers), choosing powerful verbs, organizing your writing, and more. Participants will work in small groups to learn the skill using a brief writing sample and then apply the course content to their works in progress.
Instructor: Lorie Owens, a career English educator, holds degrees from Ohio University, Muskingum University, and the Ohio State University. She taught first-year composition for Ohio University for 30 years. Her nonfiction works (including her PhD dissertation) have been published in magazines and online. She has written and published cozy mysteries as L. B. Huckleberry, and currently is seeking representation for her literary fiction novel, Unspoken Truths.
