Elements of Poetry: Exploring Themes and Tools of Poetry Writing
This workshop will explore different themes and technical aspects of poetry writing, moving from the fundamental units of poetry - the word, line, a stanza - to wider aspects of composition. We will write, read, discuss and review poems that deal with a complex themes (the family, death and loss, the erotic, dreams, childhood, witnessing and giving witness), and explore one of the essential questions of poetry - how do we develop our voice, language and poetic diction? The workshop will also cover different technical, formal elements of poetry writing (meter, rhythm and rhyming, figurative language, line breaks, soundscape). The workshop will include in-class and at-home writing assignments, review and reading and analysis as an essential part of developing our craft and poetic vision and language.
