This training is designed for boards and staff. It will address the role of a board, how to recruit a board designed for the task, and remove excuses and misconceptions about fundraising!

About the Speaker: Dave Sternberg – Founding Partner

Dave has been a nonprofit professional since obtaining his BA from The Ohio State University. He is a faculty member at the Lilly School of Philanthropy's Fund Raising School and a Governance Consultant for BoardSource. He is the only person in America to hold a position with both organizations.


For The Fund Raising School, Dave teaches Developing Annual Sustainability, Principles and Techniques of Fundraising, Developing Major Gifts, and numerous customized training programs nationally and internationally. In 2006, he authored the Purposeful Boards, Powerful Fundraising course in partnership with BoardSource.


From 1991 to 1996, Dave served as a staff member at small and large nonprofit organizations in human services and higher education.


In 1996, Dave founded Loring, Sternberg, and Associates, providing counsel to educational foundations, social service organizations, higher education, membership organizations, children’s groups, and museums.

Dave's counsel has included strategic planning, board retreats and training, capital campaign prep and fundraising counsel, and organizational assessments. Clients will say he is a gifted strategist, can assess and identify organizational and board effectiveness challenges, and is brutally honest.

In June 2008, Dave authored the second edition of Fearless Fundraising for Nonprofit Boards, now on their best sellers list. He is a frequent trainer and speaker both nationally and internationally.


Dave is active in the Association of Fundraising Professionals Indiana Chapter. He served two terms as the Vice President of Programs (1999, 2000) and served as the chapter President in 2001. In addition, he served two years as the chair of Indiana Fund Raising Day in 1997 and 1998. He is a board member for Herron Classical Schools, board chair of Purple Heart Homes, and served on the Catch the Stars Foundation and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis board.
