2024 MCFGS Board Member Application Form

The Minnesota China Friendship Garden Society (MCFGS) Nominating Committee is accepting applications for a limited number of open board positions. MCFGS seeks to create a well-balanced board. Previous board experience not required. 

The names of chosen candidates will be forwarded to the Board for approval on the August 22 election ballot.

Applicants not recommended for a board position may join one or more volunteer committees. Please see the separate Committee Application Form on our website.

Please submit this application form by August 8, 2024.

Board Member Commitment:

  • Serve a 2-year term (renewable)
  • Attend monthly Board meetings (typically by Zoom)
  • Serve as a Committee Chair, Committee member, and/or Volunteer for MCFGS-related activities
  • Attend sponsored events
  • Attend an annual strategic planning session

Board Member Expectations:

  • Understand and uphold the MCFGS mission
  • Ensure social media posts are consistent with mission
  • Protect confidential information
  • Avoid any conflicts of interest as a Board Member

The Minnesota China Friendship Garden Society’s Mission:


3.1)    This corporation is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational, and scientific purposes as specified in Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS ….

3.2)    Subject to the foregoing, the specific purposes of the corporation are to introduce, establish, promote, create programming for, and/or operate China Friendship Gardens in the State of Minnesota for the enjoyment, education, and benefit of the public, and to enhance the friendship and understanding between the peoples of China and Minnesota.  To that end, the corporation plans to research garden design, plantings and architecture, to encourage an appreciation for Chinese gardens and their historic and cultural context, to promote the understanding of China and Chinese culture, to sponsor and promote events and publications that contribute to such appreciation and understanding, and to raise funds for all of these purposes.  The corporation is not organized for profit and shall not be operated for profit.

MCFGS Committees & Subcommittees

Please indicate your interests in up to 3 subcommittees. Please also indicate whether you would like to be a Committee Chair.
In collaboration with St Paul Parks and Recreation, the Site Committee oversees and manages construction, grounds (planting/upkeep) and the overarching aesthetic vision of the garden site. The Site Committee meets quarterly or as needed due to construction, planting schedules, or other new developments. Members are encouraged to join the bi-weekly Construction meetings chaired by St. Paul Parks & Recreation.
This committee is responsible for core administrative tasks that keep the organization functional and on-track. This committee meets as needed.
Increase public awareness and build relationships with the community, building momentum for fundraising, volunteer coordinate cultural and educational events. This committee meets as needed.
Develop and implement fundraising strategy for operating expenses, construction, Garden maintenance, and programming. This committee meets monthly (~1 hr per meeting).
