First to Final Draft in 5 Weeks

In a creative lull lately? Looking for inspiration to start a story or the support to help finish one? This workshop will take you from the blank page to a polished short story draft in just five weeks. Each of us will start from scratch and write a 500-word draft by the end of the first session. In the following sessions we will rewrite the draft, increasing the word count and focusing on an individual craft element each time (e.g., point of view, conflict, setting, form, etc.). Together we’ll give and receive feedback, sharpen our writing skills, and leave with polished story drafts.

Instructor: Matt Weinkam is a writer, editor, and instructor with published work in Denver Quarterly, Sonora Review, New South, DIAGRAM, and Electric Literature. Matt is the prose editor of Gordon Square Review, a founding editor of Threadcount Magazine, and former managing editor of Passages North. He holds an MA in creative writing from Miami University, an MFA in fiction from Northern Michigan University, and he has taught creative writing as far away as Sun Yat-sen University in Zhuhai, China. He is currently the associate director of Literary Cleveland.
