Advanced Personal Essay Writing

Description: This class is for writers who have written a draft of a personal essay and are interested in receiving and giving feedback, revising it, and submitting it for publication. Together we will examine several different types of essays, including opinion pieces, personal essays, and reported essays, as well as literary and commercial markets for publication. Through workshopping, we will hone and develop our essays for submission to literary magazines. Participants will leave with a finished essay and a list of markets accepting new work.

Instructor: Lee Chilcote is a journalist, poet and author whose writing has been published by Vanity FairNext CityBelt and many literary journals as well as in The Cleveland Neighborhood GuidebookThe Cleveland Anthology and A Race Anthology: Dispatches and Artifacts from a Segregated City. He is the author of the poetry chapbooks The Shape of Home and How to Live in Ruins and has taught creative writing to youth and adults. He is a founder and past executive director of Literary Cleveland.

Details: Advanced Personal Essay Writing takes place Tuesdays November 7, 14, 20, and 27 from 6:30-8:30pm in person at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 15700 Detroit Ave, Lakewood OH 44107.

Prerequisites: Students must have a completed essay ready for workshop and submission

Size: Limited to 12 participants.
 
Scholarships: Two scholarship spots are available for this class for writers in Northeast Ohio. Apply by August 21.
