2019 Portland Hip Hop Architecture Camp Volunteer Sign Up

 

Help us guide underserved and under represented youth through the 2019 Portland Hip Hop Architecture Camp. Volunteers have the opportunity to assist students in a number of ways, from understanding architectural concepts, to using Tinkercad, to writing rap lyrics and more.

In addition to this signup form, you will be required to submit a volunteer form including consent to a background check through Self Enhancement, Inc. This form will be emailed to you after you sign up.

Find more information on the focus of each day below. You may sign up for as many shifts as possible.

Day 1: Laying the Foundation

COMPARING ARCHITECTURE TO HIP HOP

Monday, July 29

 

Day One of the Hip Hop Architecture Camp challenges participants to find parallels between architecture and Hip Hop Culture as they explore fundamental principles of both movements. Participants will create physical models of “Hip Hop Cities: which identify the structure, rhythm, and rhyme schemes of select hip hop lyrics. The completed lyric analysis will serve as the foundation for the remaining Hip Hop Architecture workshops.

 

Requested Volunteers: Building Industry Professionals (architects, engineers, contractors, etc), Design Students, anyone intersted in the intersection of architecture and hip hop culture!

Day 2: Tinkercad Day

THINKING OF A MASTERPLAN

Tuesday, July 30

 

During Day Two of The Hip Hop Architecture Camp, participants explore the structural components of hip hop music as a revolutionary approach to understanding, conceiving, and generating an architectural masterplan. Using Autodesk Tinkercad, participants will learn the basics of 3D modeling as they are challenged to convert their physical model into 3D models with additional design elements. Students are also challenged to start their architectural portfolios by posting high quality imagery to social media.

Day 3: Making (W)Raps

(W)RAPING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE

Wednesday, July 31

 

During Day Three of The Hip Hop Architecture Camp participants will learn best practices for 3D Printing through the completion of their Building (W)Raps using Autodesk Tinkercad. Participants will learn best practices for writing a rap verse, as they prepare a 16 bars about their architectural projects to be performed on Day Four of The Hip Hop Architecture Camp.

Day 4: The Rap Battle

RAPPING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Thursday, August 1

 

Day Four of The Hip Hop Architecture Camp challenges participants to create and perform a rap describing design responses to the challenges in the built environment and the challenges expressed in the lyrics of their assigned rap song. The winners of The Rap Battle will have their verses recorded for the official camp track. To conclude the day, participants will make 60 second videos to their favorite hip hop artists, athletes, and entertainers describing their architectural projects and challenging their favorite celebrities to construct their idea.

Day 5: Starchitects?

CREATING THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO

Friday, August 2

 

The Final Day of The Hip Hop Architecture Camp challenges participants to create the official music video featuring the groups’ design concepts for their community, the lyrics from Rap Battle winners, and The City as a backdrop. At the conclusion of the music video shoot, each participant will receive their 3D printed Building W(R)ap to be placed within their Lego model, and a Certificate of Completion from The Hip Hop Architecture Camp.

Consent for Criminal Background Check

It is required that volunteers go through a background check before working with SEI youth in the classroom. Be on the lookout for an email following your signup with a link to SEI's volunteer application and consent for background check. SEI's volunteer application must be completed to be considered for this volunteer opportunity.
