Do you know how expensive it is to care for historic materials?
It is difficult to come up with an exact cost for the care of every object in the museum’s collection because some items have special care requirements, while others are more stable. On average, it costs Historic Saranac Lake between $50 and $80 to process each new donation to the museum. This includes the time it takes to document, label, rehouse, and catalog each new item. HSL must also purchase archival quality storage materials to help preserve our collections.

Some of these items include:
• Acid-Free Folders: $46.85 for 100 folders
• Photo Sleeves: $25.75 for 100 sleeves
• Artifact Tags: $123.65 for 1200 tags
• Archival Metal Edge Box: $15.50 per box
• Acid-Free Record Cartons: $14.00 per box
Other necessary costs:
• Climate control systems for storage areas
• Pest control tools
• Digital storage and backup systems
