Capturing Israel: An Artistic Exploration of the Nation's History

Session 6 with Sagi Refael
Sunday, July 16, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
Private location (in Baltimore) will be shared with registrants prior to the event
Mimosas and Refreshments will be offered

Led by Sagi Refael: an established art historian, curator and educator, specializing in curatorial guidance for artists and collectors. In 2017 he founded IAILA (Israeli Art in Los Angeles), a private initiative dedicated to cultural exchange and artistic cross-pollination between Israel and the USA.

About this lecture: Israeli society began with the prominence of the “Melting Pot” ideology, which aimed to create a new identity for all those that immigrated to Israel from different cultures, with the idea of equality and a clean slate to everyone. Through the years, various non-hegemonic communities and voices existed under the radar, until gradually they resurfaced, vocally and creatively. This lecture will present and discuss 'The Other' in Israeli society and art - Mizrachi, Ethiopian, Arab and LGBTQ+ communities.
