Arctic Explorations is based on the best-selling 1856 book of that name by American physician and explorer Elisha Kent Kane, and on his secret romance with American spiritualist Margaret Fox.
The opera addresses the human desire to know what lies beyond our experience and honors the contributions of the native Inuit to the survival of Kane’s expedition. The music is scored for four soloists, chorus, and Inuit drummer, with clarinet, banjo, guitar, violin, viola, double bass and percussion. It is inspired by period documents, including Kane’s own drawings and mid-19th century popular and folk music.
