Introduction to Essay Writing - January 2023

Essays can come in many forms and draw from personal experience, observation, research, reflection, contemporary issues and more. This four-week workshop is designed to help you get started with essay writing. Together, we'll take a crash course in the craft of essay writing, read examples of the form, and generate new material with writing prompts.

Instructor: Lee Chilcote is an award-winning journalist, writer and author whose writing is published in VanityFairNext CityBelt and many literary journals as well as in The Cleveland Neighborhood GuidebookThe Cleveland Anthology and A Race Anthology: Dispatches and Artifacts from a Segregated City. His poetry chapbooks are The Shape of Home and How to Live in Ruins. He is founder and former editor of The Land, a local news startup reporting on Cleveland's neighborhoods, and a founder and past executive director of Literary Cleveland. He lives in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood of Cleveland with his family.

Introduction to Essay Writing takes place Mondays January 9, (skip January 16), January 23, January 30, and February 6 from 6:00-8:00pm in-person at LGBT Community Center Greater Cleveland, 6705 Detroit Ave, Cleveland OH 44102.

Prerequisite: None

Genre: Nonfiction

Level: Emerging

Format: Generative and craft workshop with writing outside of class.


Location: This class takes place in-person at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 15700 Detroit Ave, Lakewood OH 44107.

Size: Limited to 12 participants (including scholarships).

Suggested Sequence: Follow this class with an intermediate level or all levels nonfiction course.

Scholarships: Two scholarship spots are available for this class for writers in Northeast Ohio. Apply by December 1.
