Mike's Hike: Methane Capture with Delta Brick & Climate Company

Earlier this year, WSCC hosted a Winter Speaker Series talk with Delta Brick & Climate Company. Founder, Chris Caskey, explained their ongoing efforts to mitigate methane gas leaks from an abandoned coal mine property near Paonia. We are excited to offer this special Mike's Hike to give attendees a chance to visit the site and see first hand how Chris and his team are working to fix this ongoing issue. We will get to see their methane capture system and the methane destruction system up close!

From Delta Brick & Climate Company's website, "In November 2023, Delta Brick & Climate Company purchased an abandoned coal mine property near Paonia, Colorado in partnership with Switchback Restoration. Measurements taken via aircraft, handheld sensors and methane detectors indicate methane is leaking at an average of 87 kilograms per hour. These ongoing leaks will be mitigated using a thermal oxidizer, with plans to explore utilization of the resulting H2O and CO2 for onsite energy, elk habitat restoration and agriculture. This work is funded in part by the Department of Energy".

Difficulty: Moderate. About 3 miles in length (roundtrip), 600 feet of elevation gain. We will be hiking on a dirt road with no shade.

What to Bring: Bring snacks and water for the day. Sun protection is always good too.

Time: We'll meet to carpool at 2:30 pm at the WSCC office (204 Poplar Ave.).

Sorry, no dogs allowed on this hike. Please, only one person per sign-up form. Thank you.

If this is your first Mike's Hike, please fill out this electronic safety waiver and photo release form. We will have a physical copy available the day of the Hike if you prefer that.
