Balch Hill Rules & Regulations

Please note: this application does not guarantee you a permit for the upcoming deer hunting season on Balch Hill. The Hill has many trails and property lines which limit the number of tree stand locations; typically 8-10 stands can be placed during a single season. Up to 4 hunters may agree to share a stand, as determined by NH Fish & Game. Returning hunters are given preference, with additional spaces filled from the waitlist throughout the season.

Hunters must follow all state regulations for hunting and tree stand placement, and must possess a current archery deer hunting license before hunting on Conservancy properties. By clicking Submit, you agree to also abide by all rules and regulations specific to Balch Hill, including but not limited to:

Archery for deer hunting only;

Hunting only from tree stands;

Preference for taking does to promote healthy herds;

Additional use of caution and good judgment for safe shots near these popular trails;

Agreement to provide feedback on hunting program at end of season;

Timely reporting of any deer taken from Balch Hill;

Removal of tree stand at end of season; and

Parking in designated areas and respecting homeowners' privacy.

We are appreciative of our hunting "ambassadors" over the past few years at Balch Hill - their safety records and respectful interactions with neighbors and hikers have made a huge difference in residents' attitudes towards in-town hunting. The Hanover Conservancy recognizes hunting as an important management tool and a New Hampshire tradition, and we're grateful for your interest in working with us!

As a reminder, the Town of Hanover's Deer Management Assistance Program is separate from the Balch Hill application, and includes two additional doe permits from NH Fish & Game. Those permits are issued through the Town Clerk's office in late summer. You do not need a DMAP permit to hunt Balch Hill, or vice versa. Other Conservancy-owned properties are open to hunting with no permit needed besides your hunting license- see specific property pages on our website for any restrictions.
