The Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council would like to invite our members and the public to join us in celebrating our 35th anniversary at a unique and intimate concert featuring international folk-rock icon Shawn Phillips at the Muhammad Ali Center.

About the World Affairs Council:

The World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana is a nonpartisan, non-profit, member-based organization and regional network affiliate of Global Ties U.S. and the World Affairs Councils of America. Founded on the University of Louisville's campus in 1984 as the Louisville International Cultural Center, WAC has brought countless international visitors to our region via the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Congress, as well as numerous speaker series to Louisville addressing a wide range of topics - including Mikhail Gorbachev, Christiane Amanpour, Colin Powell, John Sculley, etc.

Ticket sales and donations from this concert will benefit the World Affairs Council, and will be put toward augmenting our recently-awarded Kentucky Colonels grant, intended for the purchase of a 15 passenger van that will provide transportation for our international visitor programs.

About the Artist:

Shawn Phillips has released more than two-dozen solo albums since 1964. He recorded with Donovan and The Beatles. He studied sitar under Ravi Shankar. Eric Clapton played guitar on Phillips' most critically acclaimed album, "Second Contribution." He gave George Harrison his first sitar lesson. He sang back-up on The Beatles' album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" on the song "Lovely Rita." He gave Joni Mitchell her first guitar lesson. He was chosen as the original lead role in the Broadway play "Jesus Christ Superstar" before having to decline for another tour. He is a registered Emergency Medical Technician, Marine Firefighter Rescuer, and Firefighter for the city of Houston, Texas. He worked in South Africa as a paramedic with the National Sea Rescue Institute....the list goes on and on.

Originally from Texas, the singer-songwriter and virtuoso guitarist has lived and toured all over the world, including South Africa where he met and lived with his wife Juliette for 15 years. Shawn, Juliette, and their son Liam moved to the Louisville, Kentucky area in 2016.

This will be Shawn's first concert in Louisville since moving to the area and his first Kentucky engagement in over a decade.
