2025 Workshop Proposals

Thank you for your interest in facilitating a workshop at PLAYA. Please make sure you have read the FAQ on PLAYA's website before filling out a workshop proposal. You can also review agendas of previous workshops here and examples of current workshop descriptions here.

About PLAYA's workshops:
PLAYA offers 6-8 creative creative and natural science and history workshops in a variety of 3-10 day sessions. Workshops explore PLAYA’s natural assets, features, history, and more-than-human neighbors and often integrate these elements through artistic practice.

What proposals do we select?
Creative workshop proposals that offer a combination of skill-building, group activities, 1:1 mentoring sessions, and ample time for generative practice and independent work are encouraged. We also seek proposals for short 3 day non-generative workshops that focus on field excursions to experience the natural assets around PLAYA such as geology, anthropology, dark skies, traditional ecological knowledge and high desert wildlife and biology. For most workshops, group meals and group shares create an opportunity for deep connections and personal and creative growth.

PLAYA prioritizes selecting workshops which could only happen here; for example, workshops which explore or highlight the natural assets, features and history at and around PLAYA's campus and within Lake County. Workshops which integrate relationships to these features with art are highly sought after. Workshops should have learning outcomes which tie back into our mission, vision and values.

Workshops for 2025 will be scheduled within the following time frames:
Mon Mar 24 - Mon Apr 21
Thurs May 1 - Mon Jun 16
Thurs July 3 - Mon July 28
Thurs Aug 28 - Tues Sept 9

*Please be aware that once you start a proposal you won't be able to to save it and return to it later. Do not press "enter" while in the application as it will submit it before you are done.

Workshop Information

Keep it simple and direct. Titles that are too long or don't get to the point of what the workshop is about can be confusing and hard to message.

Please include a description that can be used for the website that explains what skills, information or field trips the participants will experience.

Please note that if staying on PLAYA's campus, workshop attendees arrive the afternoon before the start of the workshop, and leave by 12pm the day after the final day of the workshop. In other words, for a 5 day workshop, these participants will be on campus for 7 days.

Please list 3-4 available date ranges for this workshop. 2025 workshops will be scheduled between Mon Mar 24 - Mon Apr 21, Thurs May 1 - Mon Jun 16, Thurs July 3 - Mon July 28, and Thurs Aug 28 - Tues Sept 9. We generally prefer workshop check in to be on Thursdays with programming beginning on Friday.

Include daily start and end times, times of activities and any independent work time that will be included in the workshop. We recommend you include ample generative work time for workshops that are more than 4 days in length. You can review agendas of previous workshops here: https://playasummerlake.org/guest-information/

Please list any materials or supplies the participants should bring for the workshop.

If you plan on providing materials or supplies for the participants, please list what those materials are and the amount to charge each person for those materials. That amount will be reimbursed back to you.

Is this workshop open to all skill levels, or is it for beginning, intermediate or advanced practitioners?

If planning to take students on field excursions, what is the mobility required to participate? If venturing on hikes, would you say the difficulty level is easy, medium or hard? Are some activities optional? Are there any other accessibility considerations that PLAYA and participants should take into account? Please note that PLAYA has limited ADA accessible spaces; the main Commons building and Wildcat Cabin are ADA accessible.

If you listed a team teacher or assistant, please list what each person requires for a teaching fee. Make sure to include any compensation required for travel in the fee. For lengthy workshops in which ample independent work time is scheduled, make sure to consider this as non-teaching time when determining your teaching fee.

Images

Please include 4-6 high resolution images that we can use to promote the workshop. They can include a headshot of you, photos of your or your students' work, photos of people in one of your workshops that you have permission to use, or photos that describe the subject matter.
