Mining the Local: Archival Poetics

Come play in the Vernon County archives with poet Elizabeth Hoover!

In this generative workshop, we will experiment with writing poetry in concert with archival research. We will read the work of three poets who engage in archival research, meaning research that involves handling primary source materials like letters, diaries, photographs, and recordings, among others. In addition, we will write our own poetry using archival objects as a source of inspiration.

Central questions the workshop will explore include: How can research be a part of your creative and poetic practice? How does working with archival material contribute to the invention of new poetic forms?  How does archival research take on different significance when it is filtered through a poetic viewpoint? What happens to our own poetic practice if we privilege exploratory research and deliberately seek out sources of inspiration?

* NOTE: Because we will be working with the museum’s collections, please don’t bring food or drink with you to this event. We will have hot drinks in the breakroom available. We will also be writing with pencils or you are welcome to bring a laptop or tablet to write with, but no ink writing implements, please.

DWC Cancellations

Weather

In case of inclement weather, DWC will follow the Viroqua Public School district’s cancellation notices. If the Viroqua Public School district cancels classes for the day, DWC will cancel any program scheduled for that day. If the Viroqua Public School district announces a two-hour delay, a DWC program scheduled for that evening may still be held, subject to the host’s determination. For programs scheduled on weekends, the DWC program host will decide and notify enrolled students no later than 8 a.m. on the day of the program.

Extenuating Circumstances

DWC will make every attempt to hold a scheduled program but reserves the right to cancel a program for any reason (e.g., illness, family emergency, or insufficient enrollment).

Notification

DWC will notify enrolled students via email and post a notice on social media or its Web site as soon as a cancellation decision is made.

Rescheduling

DWC will make every attempt to reschedule a canceled program. Information about the rescheduled program will be sent to enrolled students via email and announced on social media or DWC’s Web site.

Fees

If DWC cancels a program and it is not rescheduled, DWC will issue full refunds for students’ pre-paid program fees. If a student cannot attend on a rescheduled date, DWC will refund that student’s pre-paid program fee. DWC cannot be responsible for travel, lodging, or other costs prospective students incur.

Student Cancellations

DWC expects a student enrolled in a program to notify us as soon as s/he knows s/he cannot attend. DWC will refund 100% of pre-paid program fees until five days before the program begins. For student cancellations occurring between one and five days before the program begins, the DWC program host and DWC board will determine whether or to what extent a student’s pre-paid program fee may be refunded. No pre-paid fees will be refunded within 24 hours of the program’s start or after a program starts.
