2023 Architects in Schools Summer Camp

Connect with youth ages 8-12 during our virtual 2023 Architects in Schools Summer Camp, July 24-28! Inspire students to take on the role of an architect while learning about monuments and story-telling. Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing, planning, model making and more, while exploring additional art and design fields that impact our daily lives.

All volunteer positions will occur virtually over Zoom. You will have the opportunity to directly interact with youth participating in the camp.

Volunteer Needs

During the week-long camp, we will need design & building professional volunteers to participate as leaders during our live daily Zoom lessons. Daily lessons are scheduled from 12:30-1:30pm each day - we’ll ask you to sign onto Zoom 15-30 minutes early for a quick check-in before we go live. We have a lead design professional who will present the main lesson and activity each day. After the main lesson, you will be there to lead a breakout room and will give students the opportunity to ask questions, share their work, and seek advice and clarification on camp content/activities. Prior to the camp you will receive lesson plans and guidance on what you will need to do in your breakout room. In other words, we'll make sure you are prepared to guide students in a breakout room!

MONDAY, July 24, 12:00-1:30pm – Help students brainstorm who their "hero" is (with a focus on underrepresented communities) and help them identify several "core principles" to guide their design of a monument.

TUESDAY, July 25, 12:00-1:30pm – Support students as they develop their "core principles" into preliminary designs. Lead them through different forms of communication (writing, graphics, verbal, art, etc.).

WEDNESDAY, July 26, 12:00-1:30pm – Help students prepare for receiving and delivering feedback on their monument designs. Help introduce social and emotional skills that support constructive criticism and lead them to design revision.

THURSDAY, July 27, 12:00-1:30pm – Help students draw an architectural elevation drawing and refine their monument designs. Help them add details and finalize their designs for the model making process.

FRIDAY, July 28, 12:00-1:30pm - Give students positive feedback on their monument designs and everything they accomplished this week, and join us for a final celebration!
