This easy 7 mile hike is mostly on a rocky jeep road, but in good condition with very little elevation gain. We will hike about 2.75 miles to the rim overlooking the Gunnison River and stroll until it is time to head back.
We will get to see the Gunnison River between Escalante Canyon and Dominguez Canyon. There will be 360 degree views off and on - 40 miles as the eagle flies to Mt. Lamborn and much of the West Wlks, Ruby Range, and Mendicant Ridge. Also, about 60 miles as the hawk flies to the northern San Juan Mountains. If it couldn't get any better, we will also have views of Grand Mesa, the Adobe Badlands, and Uncompaghre Plateau and its geological layers.
Meet at the WSCC office (204 Poplar Ave. Paonia, CO) at 9:30 am. We will departe arounnd 9:45 am and drive about an hour to get to the parking lot. No 4 wheel drive or high clearance is needed. The parking spot is approximately 1/4 mile off of HWY 50 between Delta and Grand Junction.
Be sure to bring water, snacks or a lunch, hat/sun protection, and extra layers due to possible cooler temperatures.
