The Sail, Power, and Steam Museum's March 25th online speaker series, Captains’ Quarters, will feature local historian, Charles H. Laberbom and his underwater work uncovering shipwrecks along the coast of Maine. The talk will be held on Zoom at 6:30pm (EST). Attendance is free, but registration is required.
The waterways of Maine were once the equivalent of today’s Interstate 95 with steam and sailboats bringing travelers and cargo to destinations that dotted the coast. While not obvious to the casual observer or even the thousands of work and pleasure boats that ply our waters annually, there are stories of past storms, mishaps, and battles lying in the remains ships that were sunk long ago.
Maritime historian and archeologist, researcher, teacher, and story teller, Charles (Chip) Lagerbom is also an avid diver. His travels and explorations have taken him to the far reaches of the Antarctic and Cape Horn, but his interest in Maine and colonial maritime history has resulted in multiple dives on the wrecks that help tell the story of Maine.
Join us at 6:30pm (EST) on March 25 as we chat with Lagerbom and hear the underwater stories that he has uncovered along with an introduction by Capt. Jim Sharp, co-founder of the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum.
In the true spirit of our maritime heritage, it is suggested that everyone grab a warm beverage, settle into the comfort of their own boat or home, and fire up the woodstove during our chilly winter evenings to join us for a fascinating evening talking about weather.
