The Event
The "Lenten Study on the Doctrine of Discovery" is an educational and introspective exploration aimed primarily at engaging our CTA community members in understanding the historical implications of the Doctrine of Discovery. Held at the start of Lent 2024, this 3-part series will help us conduct an examination of conscience. Each session will shed light on its impact on Indigenous communities and provide a platform for learning, reflection, and a commitment to reconciliation.

This event builds upon CTA's newest resource, "How the Doctrine of Discovery is at Work Today" and other recent programming on the Doctrine of Discovery.

Why Attend?

  1. Educational Insight: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the Doctrine of Discovery, delving into its historical roots and the far-reaching consequences it has had on Indigenous communities. This knowledge is crucial for fostering empathy and informed dialogue.

  2. Path to Reconciliation: Explore meaningful ways to contribute to the process of healing and reconciliation. Learn about actionable steps that can be taken individually and collectively to repair the historical impact of the Doctrine of Discovery.

  3. Community Building: Join a diverse and compassionate community of individuals committed to facing uncomfortable truths together. This event provides a safe space for open dialogue, fostering connections, and building a network of support for those dedicated to making a positive change.

What to Expect

Each session will include the following:

1. A 20-minute viewing of Steven Newcomb's film The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking the Domination Code.

2. A brief meditation.

3. Facilitated break-out sessions using contemplative questions from CTA's "How the Doctrine of Discovery is at Work Today" guide.

Together, we can move toward a future rooted in justice, empathy, and reconciliation by coming together to understand and acknowledge the past.

We believe it's essential to approach this discussion with a mindful and respectful awareness of Black History Month.
