Embodied Antiracism Clergy Cohort - April/May 2024

BACKGROUND:

In January of 2023, the Center for Leadership and Neighborhood Engagement convened a cohort of white clergy for an intensive introduction to embodied antiracism. Beginning with a day-long workshop, followed by 8 additional weekly sessions, the cohort met to become more familiar with the white patterning that we embody, to grow our capacity to be with the grief and shame of our people’s history, and to develop relationships and practices that can help us move through stuck patterns and shift towards greater alignment with our commitments to equity and inclusion. Our hope is that as we become more resilient in the face of discomfort, feedback and uncertainty, we become more able to take risks, use our power towards repair, and cause less harm - making our community that much safer for everyone. That cohort was moved by this experience and helped to fund and launch a second cohort to engage new colleagues in this work! As interest grows, we are now looking to launch a third cohort.

This intensive professional development experience will include relationship building, somatic/body-based practices, and some study. The framework is informed by Somatic Experiencing, somatic abolitionism and a long list of teachers including Resmaa Menakem,  and mentors including Susan Raffo, Rachel Martin, and Tracy Williams.

LOCATION: We will do our best to choose a church location that’s in Minneapolis and centrally located and not too far from highways. Let us know if you want to host or have suggestions!

WHO IS THIS FOR:

White clergy (follow the link below to learn more about why we’re convening white folks) from the Twin Cities area. While we will welcome folks to join as an individual, we strongly encourage you to join with at least one other pastor with whom you are in relationship. Previous cohort members reiterated that the impact is greater when learning and practicing with peers who you share life/ministry with, especially as it amplifies the possibility for impact in your context.

Contribution

SUGGESTED CONTRIBUTION: $500-$900

While it’s important to us that individuals and congregations with the resources to do so are investing in this work, we acknowledge that wealth and resource is UNequally distributed among us and we do not want the cost to be a barrier to participation for anyone. Please contribute what you are able and know that your presence and participation is what is most important to us! You're also welcome to pay in multiple chunks.

The January-February cohort’s experience was generously subsidized by funds secured by the first clergy cohort, who are eager to engage their colleagues in this work! To cover the full cost of this work, this cohort will require additional funds as well. If you have ideas of church foundations or grants that might support this work, please let us know!
