Practicing Poetry

Let’s find ways to express ourselves in poems. In this workshop we will learn the basics of poetry, experiment with different poetic styles, and examine look at how titles can be chosen to enhance a poem and draw the reader in. We will address ways to effectively use line breaks, and how to choose where to begin and end a poem most effectively. Each workshop session will offer prompts and several ideas for creating new work, and will offer opportunities to workshop our poems together in a welcoming and supportive environment. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced poet you will discover new ways to develop your writing skills.

Instructor: Marion Starling Boyer is a poet and essayist with three published poetry collections: The Clock of the Long Now (Mayapple Press) and two chapbooks, Green (Finishing Line Press) and Composing the Rain (Grayson Books). Her fourth book, The Sea Was Never Far, was released May 2019 by Main Street Rag.

Boyer’s work has been nominated for a Pushcart, the Lenore Marshall Award, and the “Best of the Net.” Her essays have been published by Great Lakes Review, Paddler Magazine, The Tishman Review, Canoe and Kayak and others. She is a professor emeritus of Kalamazoo Valley Community College and has recently moved from Michigan to the Cleveland area.
