Margaret Ikiara is the Executive Director of CIFORD (Community Initiatives for Rural Development), a Pangea partner since 2012 in a semi-arid region of Kenya.
Margaret, with degrees in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, has guided CIFORD since 2002 and instituted a broad range of programs to address rural poverty and women's rights. Among those: teaching methods of sustainable agriculture for semi-arid conditions, re-forestation and reduction in use of firewood, provision of water tanks and teaching about water conservation; support for families that care for AIDS orphans; and frequent workshops for women about reproductive health, children's welfare and their rights under Kenyan law.
Margaret has tackled the issue of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), which is a practice of her tribe, head on by creating a highly successful alternative rite of passage retreat for girls. This week-long retreat, teaches about the dangers of FGM in the context of all aspects of reproductive health, the vital role of women in Kenyan society, the importance of education, and the responsibilities of girls in their own tribal traditions with the support of women elders.
Margaret will share with us what she has learned from more than two decades working to empower women and girls and alleviate poverty, and give us her insights into the current famine in Kenya, which is affecting her region.
Thank you and we are looking forward to seeing you!
