Saturday, November 2nd @ 10 AM – Geology of Flynt Quarry Walk at Flynt Quarry in Monson
Join Opacum Director and geoarchaeologist, Al Smith, and learn about the history and geology of the Flynt Quarry. This moderate walk will cover approximately 2 miles and will include areas of uneven footing.
This quarry is the source of 'Monson granite' and the quarry supplied granite for buildings from Monson to Amherst and Boston, New York City, Saratoga Springs and as far as Chicago, Iowa and Kansas. Signs of the quarry work still exist today.
Participants will also receive an informational booklet about the history of the quarry. The program is free, but RSVP is required as space is limited.
The hike will leave from the Flynt Quarry trail head on Margaret St in Monson, near the Monson High School.
