Introduction to Fiction: The Building Blocks of Short Stories - July 2022

This class will explore a broad sample of short stories in order to introduce the form to new writers and observe how it has evolved through literary history. Along the way, participants will draft a single short story of their own in multiple stages, from first draft to final revision. Writers of all levels can expect to leave the class with one deeply-considered, carefully-constructed draft, as well as a foundation of appreciation for the possibilities of the form.

Instruction will include assigned readings from celebrated short story writers, fun and accessible writing prompts to kickstart the writing practice, constructive and practical exercises designed to inspire momentum through multiple drafts, and encouraging discussion and support from a community of writers. Each week will focus on a single element of fiction, including plot, scene, structure, setting, and characterization, via suggested readings, discussion, and workshop activities. Whether you are brand new to the practice of writing or a tenured veteran looking for a structured return to fundamentals, you are welcome in Introduction to Fiction: The Building Blocks of Short Stories.

Instructor: Justin Todd Smith is a fiction writer and teacher living in Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of the MFA program at UIUC, he previously worked for Ninth Letter, and was the recipient of the Mary Kay Peer Prize for both fiction and poetry. He is hard at work on his debut fiction collection.
