2024 Architects in Schools Summer Camp

Connect with youth ages 8-12 during our virtual 2024 Architects in Schools Summer Camp, June 24-28! Inspire students to take on the role of an architect while learning about adaptive reuse. Students will be introduced to technical architecture practices such as drawing, planning, model making and more, while exploring additional art and design fields that impact our daily lives.

All volunteer positions will occur virtually over Zoom. You will have the opportunity to directly interact with youth participating in the camp.

Volunteer Needs

During the week-long camp, we will need design & building professional volunteers to participate as leaders during our live daily Zoom lessons. Daily lessons are scheduled from 12:30-1:30pm each day - we’ll ask you to sign onto Zoom 15-30 minutes early for a quick check-in before we go live. We have a lead design professional who will present the main lesson and activity each day. After the main lesson, you will be there to lead a breakout room and will give students the opportunity to ask questions, share their work, and seek advice and clarification on camp content/activities. Prior to the camp you will receive lesson plans and guidance on what you will need to do in your breakout room. In other words, we'll make sure you are prepared to guide students in a breakout room!

MONDAY, June 24, 12:00-1:30pm – Intro to Architecture & Adaptive Reuse – Working with the Breakout Room Lead, help students work through a brainstorming exercise to identify the needs of their community and get started on a collage activity.

TUESDAY, June 25, 12:00-1:30pm – Cultural Changes & Community Input – Working with the Breakout Room Lead, help students determine the “core values” that will guide their adaptive reuse project. Lead them through an exercise that helps them determine what sort of space they want to design for their community and what they want their space to feel like.

WEDNESDAY, June 26, 12:00-1:30pm – Programmatic Changes & Iteration – Working with the Breakout Room Lead, help students with a program mapping activity that will determine what occurs in their structure and the spaces needed to complete those activities.

THURSDAY, June 27, 12:00-1:30pm – Working with the Breakout Room Lead, help students choose a sustainable design feature to integrate into their project and draw an architectural elevation, floor plan, or section. Help them add details and finalize their designs for the model making process.

FRIDAY, June 28, 12:00-1:30pm - Give students positive feedback on their designs and everything they accomplished this week, and join us for a final celebration!

BREAKOUT ROOM LEAD

We are seeking volunteers to lead daily breakout rooms throughout the week of camp. You must be available to attend all daily live sessions and work with AFO staff leading up to the camp. This position is great for those wanting to dive deeper into curriculum development and lesson planning. Past AiS volunteers are encouraged to take on this role!
