Reading Contemporary Poetry - January 2023

Join Marion and Barbara to discuss books by three contemporary masters: Victoria Chang, B.H. Fairchild, and Carolyn Forché.

First, we’ll examine how Chang uses the form of a newspaper obituary to express losses of people and things in her book, Obit. Next, we’ll move to Fairchild’s The Art of the Lathe and explore his deft use of concrete, sensory images to describe the working life. And finally, we’ll turn to Pulitzer winner, Carolyn Forché’s In the Lateness of the World, and discover her ability to write about personal and historical memory in a visionary style.

No matter how familiar you are with poetry, we invite you to an open and welcoming conversation. Every session will offer several generative prompts based on the topics and poetic style exemplified by each of the three books.
