Techniques in Speculative Short Fiction

If writing a short story is hard, then writing a short story that takes place in an unfamiliar future or fantastical world can be even harder.

This class will introduce you to a variety of techniques for writing speculative short fiction including how to build a speculative world, structure an intriguing plot, and develop nuanced characters within the confines of a single short story. We’ll look at examples from some of the best contemporary writers working in the genre, and you’ll leave class with several prompts and resources to jumpstart your own speculative stories.

Instructor: Johnny Caputo’s is an active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) and his speculative fiction has appeared in Mithila Review, Cast of Wonders, Allegory, and other venues. He is also the writer of the webcomic The Ballad of Lumber Jackson. He teaches writing courses at Cleveland State University and other institutions. When not writing, he spends his time wandering the woods around Cleveland, Ohio. Find him online at www.johnnycaputo.com or on twitter @gojohnnycap.
