One moment please...

December 8, 2021

This afternoon, the Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo (FAUW) will hold its Fall General Meeting.

At that meeting, a motion will be tabled to oppose the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.

According to the draft motion, FAUW members allege that "the IHRA definition...misconstrues antisemitism to include a broad range of criticism of the State of Israel.”

On this, the IHRA definition is very clear. Criticism of Israel, when it is similar to that leveled against any other country, cannot in and of itself be regarded as antisemitic. The suggestion to the contrary is simply inaccurate.

Supported by Hillel Ontario, Hillel Waterloo is calling on FAUW leadership to speak out against the motion, and for members to attend today’s General Meeting and vote against it.

If you are concerned about this motion, please take a moment to tell the FAUW to reject the resolution under consideration and not to overrule the Jewish community’s own definition of Jewish oppression and antisemitism.
