Connecting the Dots: Sexual Health and Violence Prevention

Meg Foster, Prevention Coordinator, The Oregon Attorney General's Sexual Assault Task Force

Promoting sexual health is a key factor in preventing sexual violence. Helping people identify and create opportunities to explore their own sexuality in a positive and healthy manner is crucial to achieving a culture in which sexuality is regarded as a normal and healthy component of each of our lives. By placing a premium on the practice of healthy sexuality, including gender equity, we are attempting to change the unhealthy attitudes and behaviors that cause sexual violence. We jump-start our prevention efforts when we move beyond talking about what is wrong and come together to create a shared vision of healthy pro-social communities. In this presentation we will look at how we can create and enhance a community of healthy sexuality individually, in relationships, in our community, and in our society at large. Participants will be able to define healthy sexuality and violence prevention, and learn at least three different ways they can align these principles in their work to begin and continue changing cultures of violence for us and for future generations. They will also learn about tools that we can use to elevate our prevention efforts.
