The Art of Multiperspectivity

Multiperspectivity: n. a narrative technique by which the writer shows more than one perspective/narrator to the reader in order to complicate, enhance, expand, cross-check, distort, and/or clarify the story. In this class, we’ll tackle the art of integrating and intertwining multiple perspectives in our stories!

We’ll read and discuss short-form pieces that demonstrate multiperspectivity. We’ll specifically analyze what multiple perspectives do for a story (and why we can’t achieve the same effect with only one perspective), and how to craft and knit perspectives together. These craft techniques are applicable for both short-form and long-form writing (ie, short stories and novels alike).

Bring your half-baked story idea; your flimsy first draft; the chapter of your memoir that you just can’t get right—and a willingness to turn it on its head.

Instructor: Kayla Degala-Paraíso (she/they) is a Los Angeles-based Filipinx-American writer with a B.A. in Creative Writing from Pitzer College. She teaches creative writing independently and through GrubStreet. She also consults writers on their short- and long-form projects. Her primary writing interests: untangling messy entanglements, challenging conventions of craft, sucker-punching you in the gut. Her primary genres: experimental/hybrid, creative nonfiction/memoir, prose poetry. Her secret ingredients: the strange, the mystical, the speculative. Kayla's current project is on mental illness and surreal sisters. Kayla's work has been published in [PANK] Magazine, ANMLY, Okay Donkey Magazine, and elsewhere; and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. More at kdegalaparaiso.com.
