Adventures in Poetic Forms - Fall 2023

Description: Adventures in Poetic Forms is a seven-week generative workshop during which poets will write six poems, each in a different form. Forms explored will be a mix of older (sonnet) and newer (docupoetics). As a class, we’ll analyze and synthesize examples of each poetic form and then discuss strategies to make them our own. The following week, we’ll workshop each other’s explorations in each form. In this way, each class is split between learning about a new poetic form and workshopping each other’s poems. The class will culminate in a poetry reading in which students share their favorite work from the class. A basic understanding of poetry and poetic vocabulary is preferred but not required.

Instructor: Danny Caine is the author of the poetry collections Continental Breakfast, El Dorado Freddy'sFlavortown, and Picture Window, as well as the books How to Resist Amazon and Why and How to Protect Bookstores and Why. His writing has appeared in Diagram, HAD, Barrelhouse, Literary Hub, Publishers Weekly, and other places. He is a part owner of the Raven Book Store, Publishers Weekly's 2022 Bookstore of the Year. He has taught writing at the University of Kansas, John Carroll University, The Lawrence Arts Center, and Literary Cleveland. More at dannycaine.com.
