The focus of this course is to produce new material, while workshopping and perfecting previously written work.
The first 30-minute section of each class session will be spent writing to a prompt. During these prompts, participants can expect to experiment with form, writing techniques, and different poetic devices. The next 15 -20 minutes of each session will be spent sharing, followed by a short break. Afterwards, participants will present one previously written poem, either from an in-class prompt or a piece written outside the course. We will then as a class provide constructive feedback on the piece, evaluating everything from meter and line breaks to overall message and direction.
Participants can expect to learn tools for self-editing, refinement and revision and enhance their own craft while helping others. They should complete the course having completed six new pieces and six edited pieces.
Instructor: Zuggie Tate (she/they) is a Black, larger-bodied, trans feminine individual who lives with HIV. She has lived in Cleveland her whole life and attended college at Case Western Reserve University. She considers herself to be an artist in many genres, but her favorite outlet is definitely poetry. To date, she has been published in the Black Midwest Anthology and was a recipient of the Baldwin House Writing Fellowship with Twelve Literary Arts. She also has a strong background in poetry performance and spoken word.
