Successful Participation in the Books Between Kids Program:

Please review and check each of the following components to confirm your school’s willingness and intent to comply:

Attend an orientation meeting and training.

Designate two teacher/librarian/staff members from your school to be your Book Celebration Coordinators.

The Coordinators must attend an orientation session.

Allow time for Coordinators to set up books in a “book fair” fashion, screening books one last time to ensure appropriateness and arranging the books in such a way that children can browse.

In the weeks preceding the arrival of the book donation, build the children’s excitement and enthusiasm for this opportunity (i.e. making signs, planning a welcoming celebration, a parade).

Recruit volunteers or other staff members to assist the Coordinators with set-up and helping kids select books during the Book Celebration.

Allow time during the celebration for each class to come with their teacher to the Book Celebration. Each class should have about 20 minutes to browse and select books.

Use the Book Celebration as an opportunity to promote free reading, to practice picking out "just right books," engaging parents, encouraging "book talk," launching your summer reading campaign, and as a tool that fits within your campus goals for literacy and HISD's Literacy by 3 initiative.

Allow each child to select 6 books for their personal home libraries. Any extra books must be distributed to children, either allowing them to select more or distributing them during the summer to summer school attendees (just as long as they go home with kids and not to a school/classroom library).

Have students acknowledge the donations afterwards, by making cards, posters, write letters, etc., to assist BBK in maintaining and building donor engagement.

Complete the BBK Wrap Up Survey after the Book Celebration.

Tips for Selecting the Ideal Coordinators

Selecting coordinators to plan and implement your Book Celebration and to serve as the liaison between Books Between Kids and your campus is a crucial part to holding a successful Book Celebration. Coordinators should be a librarian, Community in Schools representative, reading specialist, or other staff/faculty member that is familiar with literacy and children’s literature. The coordinators should also have the organizational skills, passion, creativity, leadership, and time to plan and implement the Book Celebration.
