Advanced Fiction Writing Workshop - June 2023

In this seminar-style class students will develop and refine their skills with writing short fiction. We’ll read published contemporary fiction, analyze craft elements and strategies for fiction-making, and practice writing both with short in-class prompts and in longer original stories be discussed in full-class workshops. Students will receive feedback on their work from their peers and the instructor. In this class, each student will have the chance to evolve creatively, and to participate in a community based on mutual respect and encouragement.

Instructor: After working as a boilermaker in the steel mills in Ohio, Kevin P. Keating became a professor of English and began teaching at John Carroll University, Baldwin Wallace University, and Cleveland State University. His essays and stories have appeared in over fifty literary journals. His first novel The Natural Order of Things was a finalist for the 2012 Los Angeles Times First Fiction Award. His second novel The Captive Condition was launched at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con. He is the recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize and a Creative Workforce Fellowship.

Details: Advanced Fiction Writing Workshop takes place Tuesdays June 20, June 27, (no class July 4), July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1, August 8, and August 15 from 6:30-8:30pm online remotely via Zoom.

Prerequisites: Any intermediate level fiction writing course

Location: This class takes place online remotely via Zoom.

Size: Limited to 12 participants (including scholarships).

Scholarships: Two scholarship spots are available for this class for writers in Northeast Ohio. Apply by April 24.
