SPLT Trail Monitor & Steward Interest

Trail Monitor Duties

  • Periodically inspects and reports on a SPLT trail 1-2 times per year.
  • Fills out a short Monitoring Report Form/Google Form to document the condition of the trail.
  • The main purpose is to keep trails in good condition, but there is a statutory requirement for holders of trail and conservation easements to inspect their trails and lands.
  • There can be more than one Monitor for a trail, and Monitors can work as a team.

Trail Steward Duties

  • Performs periodic maintenance on a SPLT trail.
  • Includes using clippers and saws to keep the trails passable and in good condition and light trash clean-ups.
  • May be needed for larger projects, like fixing a bog bridge or re-routing a trail section to avoid an area of erosion. In those cases, SPLT will organize a team led by an experienced trails person or contractor.
  • Can work individually or in pairs/teams, depending on preference.

  • There are opportunities to attend workshops for learning trail-building techniques.
  • Stewards can also be Monitors.
  • Stewards should stay in touch with the Trails & Lands Committee about their maintenance activities and any trouble spots that may need a larger effort.
