The Art of the Personal Essay

In this intermediate, comprehensive, and immersive personal essay workshop, participants will read and discuss five highly-anthologized essays by diverse writers; complete unique generative exercises; talk about craft elements such as place, characterization, voice, and revision; and complete a first draft of an essay for week five, then a final draft for week six, when all students will present to the whole class.

Instructor: Born in the City of Cleveland, Ohio, Scott Lax is a novelist, short story author, essayist, screenwriter, movie producer, playwright and Lecturer in Screenwriting and Creative Writing at the Cleveland Institute of Art. As a fiction writer, Scott was called “A master wordsmith of the first order” by the Midwest Book Review, which said of his second novel, Vengeance Follows, “A minor masterpiece of suspense and human nature.” His first novel, The Year That Trembled, was hailed as one of 1998’s “Milestones in Fiction” by The Denver Post. Scott also produced the feature film version of the novel and adapted it as a produced stage play. Scott lives in the Chagrin Valley with his wife and son.
