2016 House of Queer Conference Registration Form

On November 19th, from 10am to 3pm (registration starts at 9:30am), 2016 LGBTQ Allyship will host its second Conference called ‘House of Queer: Housing (r)EVOLUTION' at the Senior Center of West Seattle, 4217 SW Oregon Street, Seattle WA 98116 as an opportunity to bring the LGBTQ+ community together to discuss housing access, affordability, and safety as it pertains to the particular needs of LGBTQ+ folx.

This conference is designed to continue dialogue within LGBTQ communities who have been impacted by the housing crisis in Seattle and King County. We will explore queer and trans-led solutions to LGBTQ homelessness, gentrification and the erosion of LGBTQ safety, community and affordable housing across the generations in Seattle and King County.

Background: LGBTQ Housing Equity in Seattle

In 2015 LGBTQ Allyship completed an 1100 participant survey on LGBTQ safety. We asked our community what would increase safety in Seattle and 64% identified that access to affordable housing in safer Seattle neighborhoods would increase LGBTQ safety. The results became a mandate from our community to start adding our LGBTQ voice to housing advocacy as Seattle tries to address its housing crisis. Allyship held 3 community forums on safety and housing in late 2015 and early 2016, called ‘Conversations Across Generations’, where we asked our community to identify LGBTQ housing principles to guide Allyship’s advocacy work.

Since, Allyship has been active in housing coalitions and adding an LGBTQ equity voice in passing strong housing justice policies in Seattle. We have also led our second LGBTQ Social Justice Leadership Institute, dedicated to LGBTQ Housing Equity, of 15 emerging leaders. These leaders represent impacted LGBTQ renters in Seattle and King County who are honing their skills to advocate, using an LGBTQ equity perspective, for low-income housing and equitable development in Seattle.

Currently, our conference committee is actively organizing this conference, where Allyship will provide an important space to learn in community and explore how Seattle’s housing crisis is uniquely impacting LGBTQ marginalized communities across the generations and explore solutions to increasing safety and affordable housing in Seattle.
