Reading the Brain: The Fiction of Lisa Genova - Online

Lisa Genova is an author, neuroscientist, and “empathy warrior” who’s fiction explores various neurological diseases and their impacts on identity, perception, and relationships. Participants of this group will “deep dive” into three of Genova’s novels, each of which focuses on a different life-altering neurological diagnosis including Alzheimer’s, Autism, and ALS. We will examine how Genova portrays these conditions in her fiction to foster empathy, awareness, and social action in the reader.

Instructor: Carli F. Leone is an English professor who teaches writing at Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, and Tri-C. Her scholarship explores the intersection of medicine and literature. She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Chicago.

This class will meet online Wednesdays from 10am-12pm the using ZOOM video conferencing. On the first day of class, we will give you a tutorial on how to use it. Once you sign on using the instructions we will provide, you will be able to see and talk with your instructor Carli Leone and your fellow participants—just like you would in one of our meeting rooms. All you need is a good internet connection and a computer or smartphone with a webcam.
