Creating Dynamic Characters

This class will focus on building characters that pop off the page and stick in readers’ minds. We’ll talk about the difference between “likable” and “relatable” and how one might be preferable to the other (but which!?). We’ll talk about how to use flaws, fears, phobias, hang-ups, passions, obsessions, and more to draw a character who is memorable, complicated, dynamic, and real. You can bring to class a character you’ve already created, or you can use this space to create and practice getting to know someone new. This class is a generative workshop, meaning you will create new work and productively (and respectfully) critique the work of your classmates. The first hour will be reserved for lecture and discussion; the second will be spent workshopping and brainstorming and putting class discussion into practice.

Instructor: Caroline Knecht is a writer and editor whose work has appeared in Hobart, Stirring: A Literary Journal, and Silent Auctions. She is the writer and creator of 51/50, a web series. Her first novel is very close to finished (she swears). She lives in Tremont.

Details: Creating Dynamic Characters takes place Tuesdays September 20, September 27, October 4, October 11, October 18, and October 25 from 6:30-8:30pm in person at Lakewood United Methodist Church (15700 Detroit Ave, Lakewood, OH 44107).
