Reader Series: Reading Cleveland

Reading Cleveland: Three works by Langston Hughes, Mark Winegardner, and Celeste Ng

Join fellow reading enthusiasts in exploring Cleveland classics: The Big Sea by Langston Hughes, Crooked River Burning by Mark Winegardner, and Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.

All three authors spent part or all of their childhoods in Cleveland, and each of these three works is partially or wholly set in Northeast Ohio. The Big Sea tells the story of Hughes' teen years attending Central High School and living in Fairfax when Cleveland was big and booming; Crooked River Burning chronicles the city's epic rise and fall; and Little Fires Everywhere explores race relations in the historic suburb of Shaker Heights.

Together, we'll examine how these authors shed light on Cleveland while illuminating the world we live in.

Participants will read one book every month and be given writing prompts to get discussion and ideas flowing.
