Writing the Gauntlet: 5 Poems in 6 Weeks

Generate five new poems in just six weeks with a class designed to kick your writing into gear. Each week we'll share our writing, find inspiration in published poems, and respond to in-class exercises to get going on the next piece. Throughout the class we'll discuss craft, experiment with new poetic forms, play with language and line breaks, and find out what sparks our process.

Instructor: Kelly Harris-DeBerry received her MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University in Cambridge. Before leaving Cleveland for love, she was a recipient of MOCA's Wendy L. Moore Emerging Artists Award and The Akron Museum of Art Poetry Prize. Kelly was also a former board member for the Poets and Writers League of Greater Cleveland. Since then, she has received fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center and Cave Canem. Some of her recent publishing credits include The National Parks Service Centennial Commemoration publication with Sonia Sanchez; Yale University's Caduceus Journal; Southern Review; Say It Loud: Poems for James Brown; and many more. Now living in New Orleans, Kelly continues as a poet, freelance writer, literary curator, and owner of a small communications boutique that serves nonprofits and artists. She is currently the New Orleans Literary Coordinator for Poets & Writers, Inc. Her debut book, Freedom Knows My Name (Xavier Review Press), was published in August 2020: FREEDOM KNOWS MY NAME | kellyhd.com
