led by Tate Bushell, Director of Natural Lands, Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve
The tour will take place in the meadow restoration trial plots at the Little Long Pond natural lands. The 13-acre meadow is the site of 19th century agricultural fields that were managed as open vistas by the Rockefeller family for approximately 100 years. Since 2018, the Land & Garden Preserve has taken an interest in maximizing the meadow’s ecological potential and has carried out small ‘restoration’ trials using quart size container stock and seeds (all native, mostly grown in house). We’ve had some successes and plenty of failures that participants can learn from. Deer are a constant issue and we have clay soil, which is also a challenge. Irrigation is technically possible, but logistically challenging. Be prepared for up to 1 mile of walking; transportation can be provided for a portion for those with mobility restrictions. Some walking will take place in the meadow.
In lieu of a fee, participants are invited to make a donation to Land & Garden Preserve. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required.
