Dear Mayor Harrell,
We need bold leadership to get Vision Zero back on track, and make our streets safe for all.
The Vision Zero "top to bottom review" includes much needed introspection to ensure the department treats safety as the top priority, but it doesn't lay out a plan for how to make sure everyone can get home safely to their loved ones.
The single most important thing the city can do is redesign our most dangerous streets. As the report notes, multilane arterials are responsible for 80% of all pedestrian deaths in Seattle. And while the effort to redesign Aurora Ave is advancing, SDOT needs your direction be bold, and fix other dangerous streets like Rainier Ave S, MLK Way S, Lake City Way NE, and streets in SODO (like 4th Ave S and 1st Ave S).
Please direct SDOT to implement quick safety improvements on these streets, and work towards transformational redesigns to keep everybody safe.
